For optimum online video playback, here is a listing of the supported playback methods by device:
- IE 11 on Windows 8 and up will use HTML5/HLS
- Modern versions of Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IOS v3.2+, and Android v4.4.4+ all support HTML5/HLS
- IE 11 on Windows 7 will require Flash
- IE 8-10 on any version of Windows will require Flash
- Chromium will also require Flash
- Brave with “Shield” disabled
Unfortunately, older versions of Android do not support our HTML5/HLS playback method and we cannot add support for older Android devices. Google dropped official support for Android 4.4 in October of 2017 so that version is no longer receiving security patches. We recommend using the latest version of Android available for your device.
If you have a playback issue
Ensure your device meets the requirements above for running online videos from the video hosting service platform.
If your device meets needed requirements, please try restarting your device.
If still trouble, run an Internet system speed test to be sure your connection is fast enough. You can use this Speed Test Service provided by video hosting company.
Our platform uses a CDN for video delivery. The first time a video is requested in a region the file is delivered from the Origin server on the east coast of the US to your local edge server. Once the file is cached on the edge server, all viewers in your region will receive the file delivered from the edge server instead of going all the way back to the Origin. This will improve the playback experience for all viewers in your region once the file is cached.
The speed test replicates this process. The first test may be slow because the speed test files need to be cached on your local edge server, so there will be extra latency since you were being delivered the file from the US. Subsequent tests should be much faster since the speed test files were cached after the first test was complete. This simulates how video playback improves once files have been established at your regional server.
The video player will automatically adjust the video quality based on your network speed. Below are the video playback bitrates for our hosting service. Your network must exceed the bitrates listed to playback the video at the corresponding quality.
These are the resolutions and bitrates for videos after being processed by SproutVideo, our high quality video hosting service.
